I was listening to John Osterlind last night (I know competing radio station, but I have to listen to everyone – it is how I learn). He was talking about the term “Blue Dog Democrat” (Blue Dog Coalition). Yes – it does come from our very own Blue Dog.

From Wikipedia:

Blue Dog Democrats are a group of 47 moderate and conservative Democratic Party members of the United States House of Representatives.

The term is also a reference to the “Blue Dog” paintings of Cajun artist George Rodrigue of Lafayette, Louisiana. The original members of the coalition would regularly meet in the offices of Louisiana representatives Billy Tauzin and Jimmy Hayes, both of whom had Rodrigue’s paintings on their walls (and both of whom later switched to the Republican Party).

  1. Blue is the opposite of yellow, and Blue Dog Democrats are the opposite of Yellow Dog Democrats (from the expression “I would vote for a yellow dog, if he was a Democrat”
